アマゾンプライムで「マネーボール」を見てました。実際にマーケティングの恩師が設立間もないオリックスブレーブスを優勝に導く話を思い出しました。東京のオフィスから、大阪のオリックスブレーブスの球団事務所へ向かう友人が新幹線に乗車する前の５分間の通話でアドバイスしたのは、主要スポーツ紙の５年分の一面記事を読んで分析しなさいと言うことでした。いわゆるマーケティングリサーチです。
みなさん、そこからどういったことが導きだされたと思いますか？一面記事で扱われているのは、①エース 又は ４番バッターの活躍 ② 劇的なサヨナラ勝ちです。
（１）He (=Lincoln) kept longer hours and in almost every way outworked his subordinates, which prompted an old friend and frequent visitor to ask him when he slept. Lincoln’s answer was, according to this friend, “just when everybody else is tired out.”
リンカーンは人よりも長い時間働き、ほとんどあらゆる点で部下よりもよく働いた。そのため、彼の旧友であり、彼のもとを頻繁に訪れた人が、いつ眠るのか尋ねたことがあった。この友人によると、リンカーンの返答は「私以外のみんなが疲れ切っているときだよ」というものであったという。
（２）In 1844 an astronomer noted that Sirius’s movements were irregular, and he deduced that the only explanation must be that it had a companion star, invisible to the naked eye, but exercising a gravitational pull on it.
１８４４年に、ある天文学者がシリウスの運行は不規則であることに注目し、シリウスには、肉眼では見えないがシリウスに引力を及ぼしている。対となる星があるからだとしか、その説明がつかないと推測した。
（３） After all, in mindless moments our brains still functions: all senses are present if not entirely correct, as the final perspective on what is happening around you is a little distorted compared with ‘normal’. Not only that, but you can move your muscles, even if with a little less control or with greater hesitancy.
というのも、意識がない時も私たちの脳は機能しているからである。身の周りで起こっていることへの最終的なとらえ方は「正常」な状態に比べると少し歪んでいるので、完全に正しいとまでは言わないが、それでも感覚は全て存在している。そればかりか、少し制御が鈍くなったり、すんなりではなかったりしたとしても、筋肉は動かすことができるのである。
（４）From all this emerges the obvious, and perhaps even banal, distinction between primary sources and secondary sources.
こうした全ての点から、第一次史料と第二次資料の、明白で、おそらく平凡とさえ思える区別が生じるのである。
（５）「昨日の休日はどこかへ出かけたの？」
「試験前だし、一日中、家にいたよ」
「じゃあ、ずいぶん勉強がはかどったんでしょうね」
「ところが、本を読んでいるうちに、途中でやめられなくなったんだ」
「そんなに面白い本だったの？どうせまた推理小説でしょう」
「それが、すっかり引き込まれてね。夜中に読み終えても、頭がさえてとうとう明け方まで眠れなかったよ」
“Did you go anywhere for the holiday yesterday?”
“No, I didn’t. I stayed home all day long because I have an exam soon.”
“I guess you studied a lot, then.”
“Well, actually, I started reading a book, and I couldn’t put it down.”
“Was it that good? I bed it’s another mystery.”
“It was, I just got totally into it and by the time I finished it, it was the middle of the night. Anyway, my mind was working overcome and I couldn’t get to sleep till morning.”
